This excellent drama is the story of Bobby Dupea (Nicholson), who has given up his well-bred family and a promising career as a concert pianist to go on the road. He finally settles in a small town as an oil rigger with his dimwitted girlfriend Rayette (Black). The film title refers to a book of piano lessons for beginners. Though the entire cast is uniformly excellent, Nicholson emerges as a fully formed and mature actor. Besides winning the three NY Film Critics awards announced on the poster (Best Picture, Best Director to Rafelson, and Best Supporting Actress to Black), the film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor for Nicholson, Best Supporting Actress for Black, and Best Screenplay. This original NY Film Critics one sheet poster is in very good condition.
